Shell Games in Charlie Baker's World

As we have discussed before, in Charlie Baker's World $500 Million in "savings" can balance out $2.5 Billion in tax cuts. I know. It doesn't add up -- but remember, you are in Charlie Baker's World now.

But when you take a closer look at Charlie's "savings" it gets even trickier, since some of the savings have nothing to do with the state budget. See if you can keep your eye on the cards.

1. Charlie Baker wants to cut to the state income, sales, and corporate rates, which fund the state budget.

2. Charlie says that reforming municipal health insurance benefits would save $100 Million to balance the lost revenue that funds the state budget.

3. One problem: municipal health insurance benefits are funded by municipal budgets. So there won't be any savings to the state budget. Unless, of course, Charlie is planning on reducing local AID by $100 Million. Hmmmm.

Maybe this kind of fiscal shell game means everyone is a winner in Charlie Baker's World (Hey, Charlie thought it worked on the Big Dig), but in the real world this it would result in massive cuts to vital services like schools, police & firefighters.

That's quite a bust.

Welcome to Charlie Baker's World

Welcome to Charlie Baker's world: a tongue-in-cheek look at a special place where Charlie Baker can use "facts" that aren't true; a place where, when things don't go well, it isn't his fault or he wasn't involved; a place where anything might happen.
